Making it Real – Computer Graphics and Astronomical Instrumentation

چکیده

Photo-realistic computer graphics software provides a valuable visualisation tool in the development of astronomical instrumentation. The perceived realism can convey a valuable sense of feasibility or unfeasibility of a concept. We here look at POV-Ray, an open-source ray-tracing graphics package that has been in use for several years at the AngloAustralian Observatory. AAO applications include development of both static images and short movies for detailed visualisations of conceived instruments, production of high-quality images for publication and publicity, rapid generation of illustrative figures and simple geometrical and optical studies.

RFI mitigation in the context of Pulsar coherent de-dispersion at Nancay radio astronomical Observatory

Radio astronomical pulsar observations require specific instrumentation and dedicated signal processing to cope with the dispersion caused by the interstellar medium. Moreover, the quality of observations can be limited by radio frequency interferences (RFI) generated by Telecommunications activity. This paper will present the innovative pulsar instrumentation based on Graphical Processing Unit...

A GPU based real-time software correlation system for the Murchison Widefield Array prototype

Modern graphics processing units (GPUs) are inexpensive commodity hardware that offer Tflop/s theoretical computing capacity. GPUs are well suited to many compute-intensive tasks including digital signal processing. We describe the implementation and performance of a GPU-based digital correlator for radio astronomy. The correlator is implemented using the NVIDIA CUDA development environment. We...

Directional Stroke Width Transform to Separate Text and Graphics in City Maps

One of the complex documents in the real world is city maps. In these kinds of maps, text labels overlap by graphics with having a variety of fonts and styles in different orientations. Usually, text and graphic colour is not predefined due to various map publishers. In most city maps, text and graphic lines form a single connected component. Moreover, the common regions of text and graphic lin...

High-resolution, real-time three- dimensional shape measurement on graphics processing unit

A three-dimensional (3-D) shape measurement system that can simultaneously achieve 3-D shape acquisition, reconstruction, and display at 30 frames per second (fps) with 480,000 measurement points per frame is presented. The entire processing pipeline was realized on a graphics processing unit (GPU) without the need of substantial central processing unit (CPU) power, making it achievable on a po...

Regularized Optimization Methods for Reconstruction and Modeling in Computer Graphics

The field of computer graphics deals with virtual representations of the real world. These can be obtained either through reconstruction of a model from measurements, or by directly modeling a virtual object, often on a real-world example. The former is often formalized as a regularized optimization problem, in which a data term ensures consistency between model and data and a regularization te...
